I've discovered a pretty disturbing habit of mine: when I'm concentrating really hard on something, I drool. Yesterday at work, I was trying to perform an assay that I hadn't done in over a month. I was focussing on my pipetting... and then my concentration was broken when I heard the drip of saliva splatter against my lab coat. When I had recovered from my stun, I quickly sucked up whatever spittle was still clinging to my lower lip and continued. I caught myself doing the same thing during urine microscopy and a WBC differential on a stat sample from the ER. To me, this is all pretty disturbing. I had always thought stuff like keeping the saliva in the mouth was supposed to be automatic. I've learned it's not, for me at least--and that I don't have the brain power to do more than one thing at a time!
