"Yo, yo... you got a square?" I briefly shook my head and sat down. A square... is that a bus ticket or something? I had no idea what he was talking about. I figured saying no would be less embarrassing than (a) professing my ignorance and (b) claiming that I had something I probably didn't. This short dialogue occurred today as I was waiting for my bus by Pulaski High soon after school had let out. It's sad that I feel a generation gap with people that are less than a decade younger than I am. Perhaps it's more than an age thing: the culture in which I was raised is very different from theirs. That may help me rationalize the differences that we have, but it does nothing to abate the impact of one truth: I'm definitely not getting any younger. Either that or I need a new dictionary.
