"Ladies and gentlemen, we got him." You would not believe how many times I've heard that phrase today. It all started when I got to work at just after 6 this morning. Non-stop live coverage on the radio told me over and over again that Saddam Hussein had been found hiding in a spider hole--a hole six-to-eight feet deep covered with bricks and dirt--and that he had been captured and that he had been given a medical exam and that he had grown a beard but they had shaved it off and that DNA testing confirmed it was him. Silly me, I thought I'd get a break from it by leaving the lab and going to the cafeteria. Of course, both of the televisions were also on continuous live coverage (from different networks) and I got to see the "Ladies and gentlemen, we got him" over and over again. I felt oh so much more informed now that I could put a face to Lt. Gen. Sanchez's voice. After breakfast I went back to the lab to resume my work and continue to hear about how they had found Saddam Hussein and brought him into custody and gave him his medical exam. Finally I had gotten so irritated with the coverage after about four hours that I turned the radio back to the 24/7 Christmas music that had been plaguing me since before Thanksgiving. I thought the short Christmas music playlist of Light 97.3 ("Milwaukee's Christmas Light") was bad but the news coverage was outright unbearable. Considering that the event happened many hours before any announcements were made and that there were few newsworthy updates, it was not surprising they ran out of things to talk about so soon. It's ok to announce it once in a while, in case someone else has just woken up and turned on the news, but repetitive live coverage hour after hour straight for such a static event really was just not necessary. Oh, and in case you haven't heard yet, they found Saddam Hussein in a spider hole.
