People will try almost anything once. Put together a great marketing scheme or rely on a great reputation and it's almost a sure bet that people will try a product, even if it sucks. While I was waiting for the Greyhound to Chicago for a quick overnight trip, something in the vending machine caught my attention. Bold pink and bright yellow packaging shouted: Snyder's of Hanover Coney Island Hot Dog with Mustard Flavored Potato Chips. My instincts told me hot dog flavoured chips would suck. Sure, there are ketchup chips, but do you see hamburger flavoured chips around? Of course not, that would be stupid. I was convinced that hot dog flavoured chips were equally absurd--even when coated with mustard flavouring. But then, Snyder's pretzels are among the best. Just the thought of their garlic bread nibblers was making my mouth water. And that thought was making me hungrier by the second; I needed food, any food. I decided to give the chips a chance anyway and hurriedly shelled out the 85 cents. I don't know if it was hunger seeping into my logic that persuaded me that this disgustingly flashy packaging meant good food, but those chips were enticing and I could not wait to sink my teeth into hot dog chips--despite how awful that sounded. And so after I had retrieved the package, I hastily opened it. The mustardy bouquet exploded from out of the bag and filled the air around me. And though I fully knew that hot-dog-with-mustard flavoured chips was beyond wrong, its familiar aroma was strangely tantalizing. I anxiously slipped a piece in mouth and crunched away only to find that... they sucked. I guess desperation is another thing that will get people to try a product at least once.
