I got called a "cheap chinaman" today at work. I still haven't decided whether it was uncalled for, or whether to take offence to it for that matter. I would have rather she said "cheapass" or even "cheap asshole"--something I know is considered offensive because you can't say that on TV. For some reason, it's the association with my ethnicity--even though I'll be the first to admit that Chinese people are stereotypically cheap--that rubs me the wrong way. And the fact that anybody still uses the term "chinaman," a term I still consider to be a derogatory racial slur. (She later explained that I, being a Chinese man, was factually deserving of the name "chinaman," negative connotations aside.) I was hungry. Is taking cake that someone openly offers to the room a sign of being cheap? Even when no one else gets up to take some but me? So much for all that money spent on diversity awareness training...
