Being the good kid that I am, this afternoon I was writing reviews of several articles I had read. In one of the articles, I needed a word to describe registration in clinical trials. I thought of the word "enrol(l)ment" but wasn't quite sure how to spell it. Was it enrolment or enrollment? Come to think of it, I didn't know how to spell the verb either. Was it enrol or enroll? I did a search on Google and this is what I found when searching for "enrolment enrollment canada," hoping to find the spelling in the context of Canadian usage. Looking at what I found, it's no doubt Canadians have trouble spelling... and are as confused as I am. On the same page, enrolment and enrollment are used interchangeably, in government, university and private sites. What the heck?! Word was no help either, accepting both spellings in the US English dictionary. Utterly flummoxed, I did a search just for "enrolment enrollment" and found the same mix from websites originating from different countries--including the US. What did the Merriam-Webster have to say? I guess it's settled... for now.
