I've discovered that eating at the St. Luke's cafeteria can be such a rip-off. The other night, I took a small styrofoam container--one of the typical small styrofoam containers used at restaurants--and poured myself a scoop of (what was labelled) chicken a la king. There had been some free cake that I had eaten when I got to work so I wasn't too hungry that night, and that's why I had used a small container. At the register, I declared my meal as a half portion, since full portions are served in the large styrofoam containers. As the lid popped open, the cashier scrutinized my food and said, "You know, that's not a half portion..." I honestly didn't know. Considering I normally fill the containers to the brim, what I had taken was like a third portion. I told her that I had taken but a level scoop of food. (You know you're not getting great quality food when everything can be measured in scoops.) She went on to add that what I had taken was in fact more than a normal full portion. Frustrated by the overpricing, I said that she could charge me whatever she wanted for it, be it half portion, full portion or more. She did end up charging me $1.70, instead of $2.25, so I was a little less dissatisfied. There was so little food that I had finished all of it in the time it took to walk back to the lab, or about 3 minutes. In other words, they would have charged me $2.25 for something so small I don't think anybody could be full eating. And so I've decided free food is the best. No matter how much of it you eat (i.e. how many portions) it's still free. Bring on some more cake, please...
