Normally, I think of myself as a person with patience. I enjoy teaching people and I know that requires a lot of it. So today, I was actually quite surprised at myself for how quickly I lost sight of this virtue at the Bistro Lab. Our class project deals mostly with bioperl. I was having great difficulty trying to understand exactly what happens in the graphics module to produce images but I couldn't get all the different objects to mesh and work like they are supposed to. And then, later on, I ran into a problem with code I had written weeks earlier. There is a perl module I wrote that formats pages in the project's website, giving then the proper table structure, menus, header and footer. I couldn't tell whether it was a problem with the stylesheets or the code--or something else entirely different. The module works fine for me, but it never seems to work for anyone else, and someone else needed to use it. I probably spent about 2 hours debugging and staring at both the perl and HTML code over and over again and couldn't solve that mystery either. I usually have little problem figuring things like this out (eventually) but both problems had me stumped. And increasingly pissed. Two classmates were working on this with me and no one could figure out why the module didn't work. (I didn't feel like burdening them with the bioperl stuff.) I felt so angry inside that I raised my voice a couple of times at one of them who was really starting to annoy me. Although I felt bad afterwards for doing it, I really was upset at the time. I'm thankful he accepted my apology later, but I know things like this shouldn't happen to begin with. So on top of me being frustrated with perl, bioperl, HTML and CSS, I'm also frustrated with the failure of me to behave professionally in the lab, and frustrated with me being all worked up about an isolated outburst that shouldn't happen again. I sick of all this frustration. That's it, I'm going to bed.
