While I lay in bed yesterday, I pondered a rather morbid thought: If I were to die in my sleep--or perhaps by more tragic means--how long would it take for someone to find me? In a few days, my phone battery would have died, leaving it useful for only voice mail. Friends might email or send me a message or even phone me, but asynchronous forms of communication such as email and voice mail require quite a bit of delay before causing alarm. There are emails I've been waiting months for people to reply and never once has it crossed my mind that they're dead. I'm sure others haven't stopped for a second to think that I'm dead when I wait months before sending out a reply myself. My parents--especially my mom--might fret if they don't hear from me in a few weeks, but there's not much they can do from halfway around the world. I'm not due back at work until next Tuesday. I'm sure they'd give me a call around 7:00am or so that morning (as experience tells me) but that would be the end of it. They would probably send a termination letter to my mailing address for my unexplained truancy and not much more. I've already paid for rent through the end of April so eviction wouldn't occur until May 14th. Sadly enough, I think that's when it'd finally be noticed...
